Daylight Saving Campaign

- a business briefing note

The BVEP of which Eventia is an active member is supporting Rebecca Harris' private member's bill to introduce daylight saving for a trial 3 year period.

The Government is now 100% committed to support it and the amendments to allow the devolved administrations to vote on undertaking a trial were tabled jointly with the Minister and all made it into the bill unchallenged. This sets everything up for the Third Reading which is scheduled for 20th January 2012.

However, regardless of the Government’s support, there still needs over 100 MPs in the House on 20th January 2012 if the Daylight Saving Bill is to pass through this final stage in the House of Commons before going to the House of Lords.

Therefore, the BVEP is asking anyone that is in support of this bill to write/talk to their MP/Ministerial contacts, APPG's etc - stating your support for the Bill, requesting theirs, and asking that they turn up on Jan 20th to vote in favour of it.

Below is some more information and you can download the pamphlet that was produced by the Tourism Alliance for your own use which states the benefits of Daylight Saving for the tourism industry as well as other benefits to other sectors of the economy.

DAYLIGHT SAVING CAMPAIGN INFORMATION
Research shows that this would provide numerous benefits including increased tourism employment, reduced fatalities on the roads, reduced carbon emissions and increased outdoor activity.

The Proposal
For the UK to introduce Daylight Saving for a three year trial period in order to make better use of the hours of daylight that the country receives.

This would mean moving the clocks two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in the summer (GMT+2) and one hour ahead of GMT in the winter (GMT+1).

The Outcome
Moving to Daylight Saving means that the UK would have lighter evenings all year round. This would:

  • Boost Tourism earnings by up to £3.5bn per annum
  • Create up to 80,000 new jobs in the tourism and leisure sector
  • Reduce the UK's CO2 emissions by 1.2m tonnes per annum
  • Reduce serious injuries and deaths on the road by almost 300 per annum
  • Help tackle obesity by providing an average of 55min more daylight leisure time in the evenings
